2017: angelo by Vienna House Munich Westpark

Moving on to angelo by Vienna House Munich Westpark, our second accommodation for the trip!

We departed from Nuremberg hbf to Munich hbf by Flixbus. It was a 80-minute ride. After arriving the bus stop, we took the train S7 towards Wolfratshausen directly to Harsse. The ride took 10 minutes and the hotel is 400m far from the station.

angelo is a fine hotel and I have had great time! Upon check in, a friendly staff briefed us for transport, breakfast and such like. He also told us it's actually better to take U6 because it is a more frequent train which runs every 10 minutes. The room is spacious and comfortable. My father wanted to use the kettle for boiling water but it didn't work. So I called the front desk for help. Staff came and gave us another, which could not function still so I called again and the staff gave me another one. This time, it worked but the base of the kettle was burnt...I felt sorry because in the end my father didn't use it but I do really appreciate the service and would therefore wanna express my gratitude.

A supermarket (Lidl) and a pharmacy (dm) are just next door so every day before we set off, we recycle the water bottles, get the voucher and buy 2 new bottles of water!

On the 2nd day before we went to Königssee, we also went for breakfast which costed 15 euros per person. The ambience was relaxing and there was a wide variety of food.

I like it and I could not find any shortcomings. :)

2017 DAY 5: Dachau Concentration Camp

Dachau Concentration Camp is the highlight of the stay in Munich, I would say. The place records the life of the prisoners here from 1933 to 1945 and offers visitors a glimpse of how difficult, if not impossible, it could be to live as a decent human being under the regime of Nazis.

A quick overview of the memorial site. It is divided into 4 parts: a museum, barracks, 2 crematoriums and memorials.

There is no entrance fee. Audio guide is available at the price of 3.5 euros (and 2.5 euros) as of 2017. My personal opinion would be that an audio guide is not necessary, for sufficient information is provided in the museum (and you probably have a slight idea of how atrocious everything was back then). If not, I strongly recommend you to get a copy of Anne Frank's Diary or The Book Thief. They are interesting and give you an account of what was happening. The former one is a diary written by a girl called Anne Frank. She really existed once.

We spent 2 hours there, having given up the audio guide and skipped some of the exhibits. So it's a good half-day event. :)

Transport is easy as well. Take S2 which goes to Petershausen and get off at Dachau. Right after you come out of the station, a bus stop is on your left. It is numbered 726 and goes to the memorial site. Just take note that the transport is quite infrequent here. By the way, if you purchase a Munich XXL group day ticket (priced at 15.9 euros), it covers the bus rides too!

If I understand correctly, Munich XXL is a type of ticket that goes as far as Dachau; day ticket is easy: it offers you unlimited rides for a day; group ticket means it's for up to a group of 5. Try to use the automatic machine because doing it in the counter would cost you 2 euros as a service charge!

Guess this is it. Enjoy!

2017: Mecure Hotel Kaiserhof City Center

It was the first day of our Germany-Switzerland trip. My father and I arrived Frankfurt in the early morning and this modernised city was the place we were going to settle for 4 days. Having said that, I actually intended to visit Frankfurt city for only 1 day because there isn't a lot to see (and I've been here twice already). So let's begin!

Frankfurt is the largest city in the state of Hesse. It is also the 5th largest city, the most international city and the largest financial city in Germany.

After immigration, we needed to take a shuttle bus to the train station located in Terminal 1. I had trouble getting a ticket to the city centre because it was unexpectedly expensive (4.8 euros per person). Before the trip, I looked it up online and it's 2.8 euros only; guess the price level has increased tremendously over the past few years.

Anyway, later I confirmed with the front desk in the hotel and the staff said it was a correct price for a single journey ticket to the Frankfurt center. So it's 4.8 euros as of 2017.

The hotel we stayed in was Mecure Hotel Kaiserhof City Center. It was okay; a petite hotel with breakfast provided. Location-wise, it's perfect. Just a less-than-5-minute walk to the Frankfurt main station (which really suits us because we are taking outbound trips every day) and a 15 minute walk to Römer.

Do think twice though if you are a fan of air-conditioning and are cautious about hygiene. There was only a fan in the room and the room itself was not immaculate. To be precise, there are spots here and there and I was surprised to see 3 papers that contained the wifi password were left on the floor.

Staff-wise, there was a male staff member who had a very pleasant character and was willing to help. Thumbs up to him! But the rest were not hospitable.

Still, if you ask me if it's a reasonable deal, I would say a big YES. It's cheap!
